Abstract

Indonesia has 75% of its territory consisting of seas that contain a wealth of natural resources ranging from fish, coral reefs to marine energy potential. Bantaeng Regency is located in a coastal area that stretches along the west and east for 21.5 kilometers which is quite potential for the development of fisheries and seaweed. The development of the nickel mining industry around the waters has an impact on the surrounding life. The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of heavy metal mercury (Hg) in the waters of Pajukukang. Samples were taken at 2 different stations using a purposive sampling method, then analyzed using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The results obtained were that the levels of heavy metal mercury (Hg) at stations 1 and 2 were less than 0.00003 mg/L. This figure indicates that the mercury (Hg) content is still below the threshold of 0.001 mg/L.
