Abstract

Reflective thinking is one of the higher-order thinking skills that needs to be developed in Biology learning. Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) is a learning model with the potential to foster this skill; however, its effectiveness in ecosystem learning requires further investigation. This study aimed to analyze the differences in students' reflective thinking skills between those who learned through the POGIL model and those who received instruction without POGIL in ecosystem learning. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 56 students selected through total sampling. Data were collected using an essay test designed to assess reflective thinking skills and were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney test. The results showed that students who learned through the POGIL model demonstrated better reflective thinking skills than those who learned without POGIL. The Mann–Whitney test yielded a significance value of 0.002 (p < 0.05),
indicating a statistically significant difference in reflective thinking skills between the two groups. Therefore, the POGIL model is effective in promoting students' reflective thinking skills in ecosystem learning.
